The day begins with the Pledge of Allegiance. Students recite the days of the week as well as the months of the year and discuss the weather. They count by tens and ones to 100 and have started simple addition. The alphabet is reviewed and most students can identify all letters and in both upper and lower case. The introduction of blends along with letter sounds is helping with early reading skills. Most of the class can read one vowel words. First Reader Books have been introduced and handwriting is improving daily.
The class is learning the names of the states and can identify many of them on the map. Students have been introduced to both pennies and dimes and can tell time on the hour. The children study simple math concepts including greater than, less than, patterning and problem solving.
Major emphasis is placed on literacy. Weekly letter stories are colored, cut, and sequenced and puppet stories full of alliteration are read. The main idea is discussed and the children answer questions pertaining to the story.
The class is looking forward to the introduction of subtraction, learning more about money, measurement and reading independently.
