Summer is here, school vacation just around the corner and with those hot days and balmy nights it’s no wonder the kids are clamoring to jump in the pool at every chance they get. But with all that aquatic fun comes a huge responsibility for parents and pool owners to keep our children safe.
In my role as a pool safety advocate parents ask me how can I keep their children safer around water? Every pool scenario and family I see is unique and certain strategies will work better for one family than another. My main advice to parents is to layer the protection around the pool instead of relying on a single product or strategy. That way if one “layer” should breakdown there are additional layers in place.
Owning a swimming pool is a huge responsibility, but the benefits to health, happiness and family life are immeasurable. Taking a few steps now will help ensure your pool provides happy memories all season long!

Memorial Day Is a very special day of remembrance for those that have given their lives in service of the United States of America. It is always observed on the last Monday in May.
While some Americans associate this day as the kick off to summer activities it was originally created to honor our nation’s finest military service men and women who gave their all.
The first official Memorial Day was held in the United States in May 1868. On that day, which was then called Decoration Day, people remembered those that were taken from us during the war by decorating their final resting places with flowers.
Did you know that somewhere around 1.1 million American men and women sacrificed their lives so that we may live today (usmemorialday.org)? And one of those was my brother, Sgt. Mecot Camara, United States Marine Corps.
His legacy now continues through the adventures of Patriot Pup. I get to share with each of you how special my brother was to me. In the books, my brother spends a lot of time with my son, Hank, and a very courageous, loyal, loving puppy named Patriot Pup. A very special pup that is also known for his sense of adventure mixed with a little mischief too!
So, to me, Memorial Day is the day we remember what it means to be a hero and a day we thank those who did not get the joyous homecoming they so deserved. We honor them by remembering each of their lives and sacrifice.
Patriot Pup is my way, as the author, to remember and honor my brother by sending Patriot Pup on cool adventures that teach the qualities of our United States military. Those qualities being: loyalty, courage and honor.
What does Memorial Day mean to you?
